RECENT MVCAN ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Led by the MVCAN Health Care Action Team, and the MVCAN Electoral Team, MVCAN MEMBERS MADE 7,000 CALLS TO STOP THE REPEAL OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT! Stopping the Senate's "skinny repeal" is a major victory for MVCAN, the Resistance movement and the American people, who depend on access to health care.

According to Health Care Team Member Carol Korenbrot, "Most of us never thought we would or could call strangers, but we have had incredible experiences and learned a lot: There are a lot of people out there who want to be urged to contact their elected officials, and who want their contact information handed to them."

She adds, "We learned first-hand that community voices do mean something to elected officials: Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) told MSNBC that protests have made a 'huge difference' in fighting for ObamaCare. 'The fact that people have been out there pushing back is the reason that right now healthcare hasn’t already been repealed ...They're fighting, they're making their voices heard. That's what's kept us in this fight.'”

With ACA behind them, the Health Care Team will regroup to celebrate its success to date, and consider new goals. Read more and learn more at the MVCAN monthly meeting Sun., Aug. 6. The Electoral Team will be kicking off its Fall phone bankings and trainings to win the important state house elections this Fall and flip important seats in 2018.

MVCAN MEMBERS TOOK PART IN THE FIRST OF 3 WORKSHOPS FOR WINNING TRAININGS designed to teach specific organizing and  leadership skills for maximum effectiveness and impact. The trainings are open to all MVCAN Members! See below for info.

MVCAN MEMBERS MET WITH REPRESENTATIVE JARED HUFFMAN'S OFFICE AND ESTABLISHED REGULAR MEETINGS WITH MARIN SUPERVISOR KATE SEARS.  Bernard Catalinotto reports: Two MVCAN members had our third coffee-shop meeting with Congressman Huffman's District Director Jenny Callaway on July 18 and discussed: immigration, Kimberly Ellis, impeachment policy, fundraising, and planning for the North Bay Leaders' Flip the House and Senate in 2018 meeting in September. We will hold our first monthly breakfast meeting with Kate Sears August 4 to coordinate actions re: Civil Rights, Environmental, Electoral, fundraising, impeachment and other areas. Learn more at the Aug. 6 MVCAN meeting!

MVCAN IS SPEARHEADING THE MARIN LEADERS NETWORK in an effort to coordinate the multiple Marin Resistance groups in the most efficient manner. Marin leaders are focused on working together to flip the House and the Senate in the 2018 mid-term elections. Thank you Bill Jansen, Susan Bolle and Lisa Ristorucci for leading. Learn more at the Aug. 6 MVCAN meeting!

MVCAN'S Turn Up the Heat BBQ WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! 100 MVCAN members enjoyed summer BBQ and salads, impeachment cobbler, and the company of like-minded neighbors. Look for similar MVCAN events in the future. Thank you to Laura Boles and Danny Altman for spearheading the BBQ!

MVCAN'S CIVIL RIGHTS/IMMIGRATION TEAM PRESENTED TO THE SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL to urge them to send a letter of support for SB 54, the "Sanctuary City" Bill. Mayor Phillips declined to put it on the agenda, but suggested a forum on the matter. That forum is now set for Mon., Aug. 7, 5:30 pm. for members of the community to come together and discuss SB 54. A good turnout is important, so please attend, regardless of where you live.

Please call San Rafael City Manager, Jim Schutz, 415-485-3070, and ask him to put support of SB 54 on the Aug. 7 agenda so there can be a vote right after the forum.

The Civil Rights/Immigration team also urges support for San Rafael father of three Hugo Mejia. Please see the action below.

Visit the MVCAN Civil Rights/Immigration team page for other important actions and rallies to help ensure the rights of all our community members.

Thanks to advocating from MVCAN Eco Warriors team, MILL VALLEY CITY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO GO DEEP GREEN. The Eco Warriors also helped defeat The CA Cap-and-Trade bill, AB 398.

MVCAN MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN SING FOR A BETTER WORLD with Reed Fromer, and learned songs of solidarity and and peaceful protest. Watch a YouTube video of Reed's uncle, Jon Fromer, from whom Reed learned many of the songs.

MVCAN'S JUNE COOPERMAN AND LARRY LITVAK WILL BE TRAVELING TO ATLANTA TO ATTEND NETROOTS NATION 2017, the US' largest progressive action conference. Look for future reports from their activities.

IMPORTANT ACTIONS TO TAKE NOW

ACTION 1: Join the MVCAN Civil Rights/Immigration team to lend critical support to San Rafael resident, Hugo Mejia, and his desperate effort to stay in the US.

Hugo has been a stellar community member in Marin for 17 years with a wife and 3 US born children. He has been in ICE detention since May for being undocumented. Hundreds have rallied on his behalf.

Why It’s So Important

We must demonstrate that we are not going to give up and be worn down by the ICE’s continuing unjustified detention of Hugo. Hugo faces deportation at any time. More than ever, Hugo needs the advocacy efforts of our community to show ICE that we are serious.
What to Do
Take these 3 actions to help Hugo.

1)   Attend a rally for Hugo:
Hugo Mejia Rally
Sunday, August 13, 11:00 AM

West County Detention Facility
5555 Giant Hwy
Richmond, CA 94806

Yadira, Hugo's wife, will be speaking and media will be present. This will be an extremely important time to show that the community is continuing to pay attention to Hugo’s unjust detention and that we are outraged by this unconscionable treatment of one of our community members.

2)     Call the ICE Field Director in San Francisco on Hugo’s behalf.

We must continue to pressure ICE San Francisco leadership to issue a Notice to Appear to Hugo. This Notice would allow him to be released from detention and present his full case before an Immigration judge. ICE has the legal power to issue this critical notice and is simply refusing to do so.

To get phone number and script, click here.

3)     Contribute to Hugo’s Family GoFundMe Campaign.
Help give them the means to continue to fight!
Hugo has also shared that he's so appreciative of everyone's letters of support to him. They have given him great strength during these three months in detention. He would love to continue to hear from this community.
Please continue to write to him:

Big thank you to  our activist colleagues at Sanctuary Marin for spearheading and researching this action!
