SECOND TRUTH ACT FORUM AT MARIN BOARD
of SUPERVISORS - Tuesday, July 9, 5:30- 8:30

MVCAN-ers at the Truth Act Forum in December, 2018.

Last December, due to a new state law about oversight of law enforcement, Ice Out Of Marin.Org in partnership with multiple grassroots partners and the Marin County Board of Supervisors, organized Marin County's first TRUTH Act Forum.  By any measure, it was a tremendous success, with many MVCANers and hundreds of other Marin residents showing up to support Marin County immigrants.

We proved that Marin County Sheriff Robert Doyle is sensitive to outside pressure.  Just days before the December TRUTH Act Forum took place, Sheriff Doyle announced a shift in Marin County Sheriff's Office policy which would limit the circumstances under which he would contact ICE.  This is significant because the Marin County Jail is the main source of deportations in Marin.

Since then, the Sheriff has reported a substantial drop in the number of Marin County inmates picked up by ICE from the Marin County jail.  Upon closer inspection, however, we have many questions about whether or not inmates transferred to ICE were transferred even though they may have had no convictions, only open charges.  This is not in the spirit of SB 54 and is allowing our Sheriff to act as judge, jury, and executioner. Unchanged is that ICE still picks up inmates from inside the County Jail and that ICE is still proactively notified of upcoming release dates.

In order to examine the details of what’s really happening at the jail, the Marin County Board of Supervisors has agreed to host a 2nd TRUTH Act Forum on Tuesday, July 9th from 5:30pm - 8:30 pm in the Board of Supervisors chambers. This is an important opportunity to keep the pressure on Sheriff Doyle to keep all Marin residents safe - including immigrants.

Please use this link to RSVP for the TRUTH Act Forum!

If you would like to participate in planning, Please come to the ICE Out of Marin meeting on Sunday, June 23rd at 1pm to strategize together about how we will leverage our power in the struggle to support immigrant justice in Marin and beyond.

WRITE POSTCARDS FROM HOME - RECLAIM OUR VOTE

Many MVCAN members are now writing postcards at home using voter data provided by RECLAIM OUR VOTE , which is a nonpartisan voter registration and get-out-the-vote campaign. This campaign reaches out mainly to voters of color on Unregistered and Inactive lists in key voter-suppression states.

This month’s effort is directed toward disenfranchised voters in Chowan County, North Carolina. These folks have a special election in September. The postcards need to be mailed by August 15th to make the voter registration deadline.

Note that getting disenfranchised folks to register has a positive impact well beyond the current election. Organizers say that “North Carolina has really responded well to the RECLAIM OUR VOTE postcard effort.”

And the numbers are impressive. Just from our local efforts so far in 2019 we have written 1,900 postcards.  WOW! And the postcarding team continues to grow, with three more members so far this month!

Please contact MVCAN lead organizer Bob Haar at politicalbobh@gmail.com for more info and to get a postcard kit or email with everything you need to get started.

CONGRESSMAN JOSH HARDER FEATURED AT MVCAN FALL KICK-OFF MEETING!

SUNDAY SEPT. 15

Join us at the MVCAN Fall Kick-Off Meeting on Sunday, September 15, 5 - 6:30PM, to hear from one of our favorite Members of Congress, Josh Harder, from CD-10 (Modesto).

Team MVCAN AND MARIN DEMOCRACY ACTION worked hard the entire year in 2018 to help elect this impressive young U.S. Representative, turning out >200 volunteers to call and canvass for Josh Harder.  He’ll fill us in on his first year in Congress, the legislation he’s introduced and helped pass, as well as news from his district on how we can help defend his seat in 2020.

Stay tuned for more meeting details coming soon.

MVCAN: WHERE WE’VE BEEN AND WHAT WE DID

1

REPORT BACK FROM MEETING WITH CONGRESSMAN HUFFMAN

Dan Krimm (MVCAN) and Indivisible leaders meeting with Jared Huffman
  • A terrific team of Marin grassroots organizers, including our own Dan Krimm, met with Congressman Jared Huffman last week to discuss policy and legislation.

Rep Huffman has consistently been very progressive. To that end we asked Jared to co-sponsor a few bills including:

    • HR 2169 - rent relief via tax credit

    • HR 2592 - transparency for digital election ads

    • HR 2754 - conduct elections with paper ballots and audits

    • HR 40 - study reparations for African-Americans

We also discussed his position on health coverage options (Medicare for all, public option, etc.) and recent developments regarding net neutrality.

In addition, we reinforced his previously stated affirmative position on beginning impeachment proceedings, for which there is 80% support (with an additional 12% “maybe”) among recently surveyed Indivisible members.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ECO RESOLUTION PASSES

Liz Schumacher addressing the Board.

MVCAN Eco Team members spoke publicly this week at the  Marin Board of Supervisors in favor of an environmental resolution promoted by Kate Sears, our Mill Valley Supervisor.

Two of our MVCAN Eco Team members, Liz Schumacher and Elspeth Martin attended the Board of Supervisors meeting to speak in support of the "Resolution Opposing Legal Immunity for Fossil Fuel Companies & Reaffirming Ongoing Support for EPA's Regulatory Authority for Public Protection."

This resolution opposes giving legal immunity to fossil fuel companies for the damages they have caused and will cause in the future. Further, the resolution affirms the Board's support for the continued regulatory authority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its implantation of the Clean Power Act. Finally, it seeks to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for the damages produced over the last fifty years.

The resolution passed unanimously! Kudos to our members and to Kate Sears and her team for being forward on this issue!

UPDATE ON THE CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION

MVCAN-ers at CA Dem Convention

Susan Bolle, Larry Litvak and other MVCAN members attended the CA Dem party convention. Susan and other convention delegates that MVCAN had helped elect were voting members for the statewide offices. Susan represented us as CADEM Assembly Delegate from District 10 at her first CA Democratic Party Convention (May 29-June 2)

Susan reports that the days were packed with:

  • Campaigning and voting for MVCAN-endorsed Kimberly Ellis for Chair of the CA Democratic Party. (Kimberly lost to Rusty Hicks, a labor organizer from LA whose impressive strength among labor voters was very evident in his win.)

  • Listening to many of our CA Democratic leaders, including Governor Newsom, Speaker Pelosi, SF Mayor London Breed, Attorney General Xavier Becerra...and Tom Steyer

  • Cheering wildly for the 14 Democratic Presidential candidates who showed up at the San Francisco “cattle call” to give inspiring 6 minute speeches, attend the caucuses and shake many hands

REPORT BACK FROM GOLDEN GATE GUN SAFETY MARCH

On June 8, hundreds of activists and more than a dozen MVCANers marched in the Gun Safety Bridge Walk.  Helen Rosen from Marin Moms Demand Action and the MVCAN Civil Rights/Immigration Team helped lead the entire event and rally.  THANK YOU to Helen for all her work and to Barbara Rowe, Leigh Ann Townsend and all who were able to walk on that beautiful, moving day.

Check out the article and wonderful photos in the Marin IJ: goldengate-bridge-fills-as-hundreds-rally-to-end-gun-violence.

5

REPORT ON MVCAN MONTHLY MEETING

MVCANers were treated to an incisive and informative talk earlier this month from our special guest, Emily Rusch of CALPIRG. She spoke about what is timely and progressive in the California legislature and we heard from Larry Litvak about how MVCAN calls to our reps were organized and then impacted outcomes in the recent legislative session.

MVCAN SIGNS ON TO NATIONAL INDIVISIBLE STATEMENT REGARDING IMPEACHMENT

In addition to being a free-standing, unique group, MVCAN is linked with the national Indivisible movement, which includes 6,000 local organizations nationwide. We welcome and support Indivisible's strong stand for impeachment inquiry. We believe it is very important for MVCAN, along with all the other Indivisible groups and all people of good will, to push for impeachment inquiry now.
