MILL VALLEY CITY COUNCIL MEETING ON POLICING

Monday, Oct 3, 6:30 pm

HELP STOP RACIAL PROFILING IN MILL VALLEY -
PLEASE SHOW UP FOR JUSTICE!

The meeting will not be televised. We need you there!!

NOTE NEW LOCATION:

Mill Valley Community Center

180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, CA

On Monday, Oct 3, at 6:30 pm, the Mill Valley City Council will hear a report from Police Chief Navarro on race and policing in Mill Valley. The independent Mill Valley Force for Racial Equity and Empowerment (MVFREE) Police Team, which has been working with MVPD leadership on anti-bias measures, will also be afforded an opportunity to report.

Direct evidence of racial profiling has been collected in Mill Valley over the past year. This data collection has been dictated through a CA state law mandating collection of racial data by police departments. This RACIAL and IDENTITY PROFILING ACT (RIPA) of 2015 (AB 953) “prohibits racial and identity profiling by law enforcement. Requires law enforcement agencies to report data to the Attorney General's Office on a) all vehicle and pedestrian stops and b) citizen complaints alleging racial and identity profiling.”

In the past year, the following police data has been collected in Mill Valley:

  • Black people were stopped by Mill Valley police at 6.5 times the rate of White people.

  • Latinx people were stopped by Mill Valley police at 3.2 times the rate of White people.

  • Mill Valley community members called the police about Black people at more than 19 times the rate they did about White people.

  • In most of those stops, police found no cause for citation or arrest.

READ THE REPORT HERE

Must Read! Check out the new article in the Pacific Sun newspaper:
Racial Inequities In Mill Valley Policing” by Nikki Silverstein.

Please show up to Monday’s City Council meeting to get answers as to why police stops are severely skewed by race. Support racial justice in Mill Valley!

MVCAN ECO TEAM: LOTS OF NEWS!

Mill Valley Emergency Climate Resolution Has Passed!

After years of lobbying during which the town government refused to vote on the issue, Mill Valley City Council has unanimously passed a climate emergency resolution (among the last Marin cities to do so).   Our new councilman Max Perry, our own Marilyn Price, Sustainable Mill Valley, plus many others made it happen. Kudos to all who contributed to this significant accomplishment!

Comprehensive Weekly ECO Newsletter:

Please check out Marilyn Price’s fabulous MVCAN ECO TEAM Weekly Action Newsletter, which informs on current climate and social issues. It includes links to signing petitions, sending emails to elected officials, registering for webinars, as well as other ways to take immediate yet impactful actions!

Take Climate Action On Your Phone:

The Climate Action Now app makes it exceptionally easy to take meaningful climate action on your phone in just seconds or minutes. Most actions you take earn points, and when you’ve earned enough points, they’ll plant a tree on your behalf. Find out why Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, Elders Climate Action and other groups have adopted Climate Action Now as one of their “go to” apps for climate activism.

To download the app, go to CLIMATE ACTION NOW.

Volunteer With Sustainable Marin's Climate Rapid Response Network:

Marin's Climate Rapid Response Network will manage a database of Marin County community leaders, advocates, and volunteers. This database would be used to create a network for each town to promote advocacy on policy initiatives that focus on sustainability and climate change.

To participate, sign up at CLIMATE RAPID RESPONSE NETWORK.
