PHONE BANK FOR IMPORTANT ELECTIONS - Every Saturday!

WITH ONLY 2 WEEKS TO THE VIRGINIA STATE HOUSE AND GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS, WE NEED TO GET OUT THE VOTE!

In addition to phoning, we will be using the texting app “Ground Game” to text voters in Virginia for the Virginia State House and Gubernatorial elections to be held Nov. 7. If we can turn out the same voters who went to the polls November 8, 2016, we will win!

Please sign up here to join us this Saturday, October 28 from 10am-12pm at Sylvia’s home in Ross. You will get directions and details once you have registered:

https://demaction.us/events/39210242892/   Training is provided.

Note: We are still not able to use our office in Sausalito--it's being used as a staging area for donations for the families affected by the fires. We hope to be back in our office next week in time for the Get Out The Vote weekend.

Additional phone banking opportunity coming up:

We will have another phone bank/text bank Wednesday 11/1 from 3 - 5pm in Corte Madera--more details coming soon on that date and additional phone banks to be held 11/5, and 11/6. For more details, see the Electoral Team.

The calls and texts we make are very important to winning back the Virginia state government. The Governor's race is extremely tight, with Republican candidate Ed Gillespie spending millions on negative ads against our Democratic candidate Lt. Gov. Northam. We need to hold that Governor's seat!

NOW YOU CAN TEXT FROM HOME

REACH VOTERS IN BATTLEGROUND STATES!

Time is running out before Election Day, Nov 7, in Virginia.

We have 14 days to mobilize voters in Virginia. 14 days to make a difference.

That is why we are organizing a massive Text Out The Vote initiative this weekend! Although you may not be able to come to Virginia to talk to voters, by texting from home you will be able to turn out voters to the polls!

Here's how it will work:

You will sign up here to indicate which day, Sat,10/28 or Sun,10/29, (or both days if you're a rock star) you are able to text.

Then, on your preferred texting day you will sign in to Groundgame! You will be assigned a personalized list of Virginia voters.

Note: you’ll need a @gmail address or a Google Account to sign in to Groundgame. If you don’t use Gmail, then go to https://accounts.google.com /SignUp and click “I prefer to use my current email address” to create a Google Account for your current email address.

Throughout the weekend we will send out progress reports to let you know how you are doing individually, as well as how we are doing as a team!

Our goal is to text 75,000 voters by the end of the weekend. In 2016 Donald Trump won the state of Wisconsin by 27,000 votes. This work matters. Mobilizing these voters CAN and WILL make a difference in Virginia.

ACTIONS OF THE WEEK

ACTION 1: HELP DEFEAT THE TRUMP TAX SCAM

The vast majority of the benefits of the Trump Tax Scam will flow to the very richest members of  society.

Deceptively marketed by Trump and the Republicans as a means to give a tax break to the middle class, the Trump Tax Scam will actually make existing inequality even worse. We know that TrumpCare was defeated by exercising massive constituent power. Defeating the Trump Tax Scam will take the same level of effort, and the stakes are just as high!

Call your Democratic Members of Congress and tell them to gear up for a fight and do everything they can to slow down and expose the Trump Tax Scam for the scam it is.

ACTION 2: SUPPORT IMMIGRANT DETAINEE HUGO MEJIA

To update you on Hugo Mejia’s situation, fortunately, he has not yet been deported. Hugo is a valuable immigrant member of our Marin community, who is still being detained by the ICE at Rio Consume Correctional Center in Elk Grove, CA. On November 3rd he will have been detained for 6 months, which now makes him eligible for a bond hearing in front of a judge.

Help ensure that Hugo is released on bond in a few weeks.

What to Do - Write a letter of support for Hugo Mejia.

It is critical that the judge see and understand community support for Hugo. Your letters will be delivered to the judge prior hearing his case. If you wrote a letter of support for Hugo many months ago, please update it and/or write another. For details, go to the Civil Rights/Immigration Team. Letters should be received by Wednesday, November 1st.

Please share the letter writing campaign widely with your networks. The letters and visits that Hugo has received while in detainment have given him strength and have kept him hopeful. He continues to express the deepest gratitude to each of you and for this tremendous community support.

CRITICAL NEED FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN MARIN

The need for affordable housing in Marin is even more urgent since the devastating fires in Sonoma and Napa!

ACTION: Attend the meeting and/or write a letter of support to the Marin County Planning Commission Meeting on Monday Oct. 30, 1:00pm.

At the meeting of the planning commission, the issue of  Strawberry Seminary Property will be discussed. This property risks losing 9-10 affordable units in the proposed project if the Planning Commission does not extend the Master Plan.

We need to urge the Planning Commission to extend the Master Plan without added conditions to avoid the loss of badly needed homes before environmental review is started or merits of the project have been considered.  Questions?  Contact Barbara Rowe barbrowe@aol.com

ASSIST VICTIMS OF THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRES

MVCAN urges you to continue to help our North Bay neighbors, who have lost property and livelihoods in the fires. Click here for a comprehensive and periodically updated list from the Marin/Napa Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership that contains both volunteer and donation opportunities:

To target your donation to disadvantaged, undocumented immigrant communities, GIVE TO UNDOCUFUND FOR FIRE RELIEF in Sonoma County.

The UndocuFund will ensure that undocumented families displaced by the fires will have the support and resources they need to recover and rebuild. Launched by a coalition of local immigration nonprofits, the UndocuFund for Fire Relief in Sonoma County is providing direct assistance to undocumented victims of the Northern California fires who are ineligible for FEMA assistance. 100% of funds will go to victim support. www.undocufund.org

SUPPORT ACA ENROLLMENT IN CALIFORNIA

We are gearing up to support enrollment efforts for Covered California.Although Californians are in better shape than most of the country, we believe that due to Trump’s efforts at sabotaging the ACA, many eligible individuals may miss out on the opportunity to enroll in Covered California.

To learn how to encourage Covered California enrollment, attend the training session given by the Health Care Team. For more details, see the Health Care team.

Event: Health Care Team Meeting
When: Sunday October 29, 2:30 - 4:00 pm
Where: Sewage Agency of Southern Marin Conference Room,
450 Sycamore Ave, Mill Valley

Health Team Guest Speaker: Armando Cerros

Armando, the Patient Navigator Supervisor at Marin Community Clinics, will be explaining the enrollment process and methods to encourage eligible people to sign up!

CROSS-COLLABORATION AMONG MARIN ACTIVIST GROUPS

“Marin Leaders Network” is our coalition of Marin activist groups who find ways to work with each other for maximum power and efficiency.

MVCAN is proud to be the initiating organization and core member of Marin Leaders Network! On Oct 25, ten groups got together: MVCAN, Democracy Action Marin, Swing Left Marin, Sister District CA-2, Marin Democrats, Sanctuary Marin, Marin Resists, Rock The Congress, OFA and West Marin Electioneers.

Areas of joint activism covered in the Marin Leaders Network meeting:

FLIP CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 10!

CD 10 is our nearest swing congressional district in the 2018 midterm elections, and a myriad of strategic activities are either ongoing or in the planning stage.

Our partners from Swing Left Marin on the Tracy "Go Team" are leading an innovative tactic called “deep canvassing.” Over a period of months, volunteers will be forging a genuine relationship with the voters in the precinct they canvass in order to build support, but also to get feedback from voters on the issues that are important to them. Alternatively, volunteers will also be doing voter registration and regular canvassing. https://www.meetup.com/Swing-Left-Marin/

TAKE BACK TUESDAYS

The Marin Democrats have started Take Back Tuesdays -- phone banks held each Tuesday targeting  the prioritized "flippable"  California Congressional Districts. A Day of Action will be held 11/4 featuring training, canvassing, phone banks & voter registration. Contact MarinDems@gmail.com.

Thanks to our fabulous MVCAN/MLN coordinators; Bill Jansen, Susan Bolle, and Leslie Walsh for making all this happen. Marin Leaders Network is using a common calendar to post all the member groups' events, trainings, protests, and meetings. Check the comprehensive Marin Resists Facebook page
