National Climate Day of Action
Sunday, Nov 12th, 4pm,
San Rafael Community Center

MVCAN Eco-Warriors will be there to support the National Day of Action in San Rafael. Join us!

In a powerful refutation of Trump’s shameful withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, this event will highlight the local leaders and institutions who have re-committed to upholding our nation’s Paris pledge. They will talk about Marin’s and Sonoma’s remarkable climate actions. These stories, along with those from other U.S. cities, will be sent to delegates in Bonn to send a strong message that most Americans stand with the Paris accords!

Presentations will also provide insight into the recent firestorms in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties and help us understand what happened. What role does climate change play in intensifying wildfires, and what actions are needed?

Event: National Climate Day

When: Sun, Nov 12th, 4-6pm
Where: San Rafael Community Center,  618 B Street, San Rafael, CA 94901

TALKING TO VOTERS IN MODESTO - WHY EARLY IS IMPORTANT

June and Larry get briefed before they head out for a day of early canvassing

It’s an entire year before the 2018 mid-term elections, but now is the time to lay the groundwork for electing Democrats to Congress and flipping swing districts. MVCAN members June Cooperman and Larry Litvak took a trip to Modesto last weekend to find out how this works.

June and Larry joined in an effort to have low key conversations with voters early in the electoral process (instead of just barnstorming neighborhoods a couple of weeks before an election). They linked up with a local Modesto group, an AFL-CIO community action group called Working America.

After knocking on doors in a very mixed neighborhood of Modesto and talking to voters about the issues that are important to them, June observes, “People react very differently when you show up at the door without a Vote for Somebody button. They’re more likely to let you in.  Especially, since we want to know what issues are important to the voter we’re talking to. Once they tell us, we explain their Congressperson’s position on the particular issue they care about. We then give them a way to step into the political process.” In this case, it was signing a petition to Jeff Denham, their Congressman, asking him to oppose the budget priorities of the Republican party.

It’s pretty powerful to come into a congressional district early, find out what people care about, and get them to take an action. So far this group has collected 10,000 constituent signatures--which is a very big number in a single congressional district--especially for a Congressperson who won by less than 10,000 votes.

MVCAN is exploring different options this Fall for helping with voter mobilization in CD-10 (Modesto). We will keep you posted about opportunities as they arise. This weekend we are sending volunteers to Tracy to canvass residents there with the group Swing Left Marin and local Tracy activists.

ACTION OF THE WEEK - DEFEAT THE TRUMP TAX SCAM!

The Republican budget and tax bills are out. Donald Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress are back at it. This time, they’re trying to push through one of the most horrific and destructive budgets and tax proposals in the history of our country.

THIS BUDGET AND TAX PLAN WOULD DO INCALCULABLE HARM to tens of millions of working families, women, kids, the sick, the elderly, and the poor. This Republican budget makes enormous cuts to education, nutrition, affordable housing and transportation.

Meanwhile, while decimating life and death programs for working families, the Republican tax plan provides $1.9 trillion in tax breaks for the richest people in our country and the largest corporations. In fact, about 80 percent of the Republican tax breaks would go to the top 1 percent and 40 percent to the top 1/10 of 1 percent.

To quote Bernie Sanders, “This is the fight of a lifetime.”

We can stop this morally reprehensible Republican tax scam—just like we stopped the series of attacks on health care—with grassroots energy, steadfast innovation, and total determination.

For more information, go to: http://pol.moveon.org/.

By donating, you will help to organize constituents across the country to make nonstop waves of phone calls, join rallies and protests, and raise their voices online in ways that Republican lawmakers won't be able to ignore.

ACTION: CALL YOUR SENATORS TO OPPOSE THE TRUMP TAX SCAM
